The Portuguese actor, director, playwright and producer Tiago Rodrigues will be leading the Ecole des Maîtres this year. In the 1990s, Rodrigues encountered the Belgian theatre group STAN which inspired his passion for the process of collective creativity. This approach offers actors great freedom and scope for intervention, and has been a constant influence on his approach to theatre.  Rodrigues and Magda Bizarro founded "Mundo Perfeito" (Perfect World) in Lisbon in 2003. Over the following decade they created over 30 plays, also collaborating with other artists in joint productions and international tours. Tiago Rodrigues has been the artistic director of the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II in Lisbon since 2014, seizing the opportunity to build bridges between cities and countries, as a host and promoter of the idea of a living theatre. His theatre projects are performed in theatres and festivals all around the world. His most recent works include his production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, presented at the festival of Avignon; Sadness and Joy in the Life of Giraffes; By Heart, a work of relational art and the interweaving of stories from the world of books; and Bovary. For the Ecole, Tiago Rodrigues will work with participants on a project called Pericolo felice / Danger heureux/ Perigo feliz / Happy danger.

“I like writing for those around me and I’m more interested in the problems that affect us and our desires than I am in props and scenery, characters and the like”, writes Tiago Rodrigues in his message to the actors and actresses that will enrol in this year’s Ecole des Maîtres.
“In theatre, like in a shipwreck, people come first, and we should only worry about what objects can be saved afterwards. In this instance there will be artists from different countries, all speaking different languages. I want to write for these people, though I know it might not be easy.
So far we are strangers, but we already know that we all share this linguistic problem, and that will bring us together from the very start of this adventure.
So, if we are to spend time working and travelling together, we must be sure to pack in our suitcase an openly declared love for words, a passion for playing with translation and delving into the generous complexities of a truly polyglot world.”
