The Book of Jonah

For this artistic research project, the Croatian performer Matija Ferlin has drawn inspiration from the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament.
Jonah is at the centre of an instructional tale told in just four chapters, characterized by irony, meekness and universal values.
The group considered many aspects as they began to develop their performance during the residency: the Mission of a prophet sent to convert a people hostile to him, the temptation to escape to avoid the task, the emergence of the values and problematic areas in the practice of equality and the dialogue between peoples.
The challenge for Matija Ferlin with this new research is to bring these issues into the present day, where they are questions of absolutely contemporary importance. What is happening in Europe today raises important questions and seems to require new forms of communication with the different cultures from other origins that we now find ourselves in contact with.
The things that are happening can lead to forms of xenophobia and closure, dominated by fear. However, this story may also awaken an awareness towards others and to our humanity.

Matija Ferlin is an emerging multidisciplinary artist and performer from Croatia.
He was born in Pula in 1982, and trained in graphic arts and video, theatre and dance. He lived in Amsterdam, where he graduated from the New Dance Development School and also worked in Berlin. Upon his return to Croatia, he concentrated on research and re-articulation of various performance formats and has produced projects using other media, short films, videos and exhibitions.
